Contact Wheels

Hallam Polymer Engineering has a range of contact wheels to suit all surface finishing applications – power grinding, polishing, blending, radiusing - on all types of material. The type and quality of the Contact Wheel is an important factor in the performance of an abrasive belt machine.

There are four main types of contact wheel, each with a range of groove form and hardness. Selection of the right wheel is all important. The wheels and their operating characteristics are described below and overleaf. Consult our sales staff if you cannot find what you want

Rubberflex

Rubberflex wheels are designed for general finishing purposes. They can be used for wet and dry applications, but should not be brought into contact with oils or oil based lubricants which may perish the rubber.

Maximum speed 2700 surface metres per minute (SMpm).

Standard Hardness: 45º 70º 90º
Standard Diameters: 50mm – 500mm
Standard Widths: 12mm – 1250mm

Plastiflex

Plastiflex wheels are made of polyurethane, a very tough material which is oil and coolant resistant. They can be used wet and dry. Plastiflex is particularly suitable for specialised work where extra hardness, oil resistance, or dimensional stability are needed. The wheels will not expand or distort under pressure or at speed.

Maximum speed 3500 SMpm.

Standard Hardness: 45º 75º 95º
Standard Diameters: 50mm – 500mm
Standard Widths: 10mm – 1250mm

Foamflex

The Foamflex wheel is made of a special polyurethane foam of uniform density. It is primarily for soft applications where light finishing, radiusing or contouring is required. The wheel should not be used at high speed or under heavy pressure which may melt the tyre. A typical speed range is 1520-1830 SMpm. The wheel is oil and water resistant.

Maximum speed 3500 SMpm.

Standard Hardness: 25º
Standard Diameters: 100mm – 450mm (excluding 175mm)
Standard Widths: 20mm – 200mm

Turboflex

Turboflex wheels allow the abrasive belt to bite into the material giving a high rate of stock removal. They can be used at high speed. The Q wheels have foam inserts between the vanes to reduce noise when running at speed. Turboflex wheels with canvas vanes or foam inserts are not oil and water resistant. The TPU wheel, which has polyurethane vanes, can be used wet and with oil and oil based lubricants.

Maximum speed 3700 SMpm.
